The first 3 months are the double-blind period. Twelve of 20 subjects in the C&E group and 19 of 20 in the placebo group completed this portion of the study. The C&E group lost 4.3 plusminus 0.7% of initial body weight compared with 1.0 plusminus 0.6% in the placebo group at the end of 3 months. This difference was significant by treatment effect (p < 0.02), by time effect (p < 0.0001), and by time times treatment interaction (p < 0.01). The time slices showed significant differences (star) at 2 months (p < 0.01) and 3 months (p < 0.005). At the end of 6 months of treatment with C&E, the group originally on C&E lost 7.8 plusminus 1.9% of their initial body weight, and the group originally on placebo lost 7.3 plusminus 1.9%.
