Ditch the dime for less change
An 18-cent coin would be easier on American pockets.
If Americans want less loose change rattling around in their purses and pockets, they should replace the 10-cent dime with an 18-cent coin, according to mathematician Jeffrey Shallit of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada1.
Shallit has figured out the denominations that would give the minimum number of coins for any amount of change.
