Physicists tell ripping yarns
Sound hints at how paper tears.
Physicists at the Helsinki University of Technology in Finland have spent hours ripping up newspaper and measuring the noise it makes1. The sound, conclude Lauri Salminen and colleagues, is nothing like breaking glass.
