The discovery, through studies carried out between 1984 and 1990, of the biological fundamentals of the ubiquitin system and its remarkable functional reach (reviewed in refs. 1,2) gave rise to a new understanding in which regulated intracellular proteolysis became a central feature of cellular physiology.
