Finding a protein's Achilles heel

Andreas Matouschek & Carlos Bustamante

The authors are in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois 60208 (A.M.) and the Department of Physics, Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 (C.B.). matouschek@northwestern.edu

Recent ensemble and single molecule manipulation studies highlight the mechanical nature of protein unfolding in vivo and, thus, the greater need to understand the response of proteins to mechanical force.
