Inês Chen, Chief Editor

Inês Chen obtained her Ph.D. with Salete Newton at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, after working on enteropathogenic bacteria and vaccine development with Rino Rappuoli in Siena, Italy. She had post-doctoral training with Emil C. Gotschlich at the Rockefeller University, investigating bacterial transformation and continued her research on DNA uptake with David Dubnau at the Public Health Research Institute. She joined the journal in 2006 and became Chief Editor in 2011.

Anke Sparmann, Senior Editor

Anke Sparmann obtained her Ph.D. with Dafna Bar-Sagi at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she studied the role of Ras-induced Interleukin-8 expression in tumor growth and angiogenesis. During a post-doctoral period in the group of Maarten van Lohuizen at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, she focused on analyzing dynamic changes of Polycomb-complex composition during neural stem cell differentiation. After starting her editorial career at The EMBO Journal, she joined Nature Structural & Molecular Biology in 2014 after a brief interlude at Nature Communications.

Beth Moorefield, Senior Editor

Beth Moorefield started bench work on transcriptional regulation by bacterial sigma factors in Michael Chamberlin's lab as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley. Her interest in gene expression was extended to nuclear RNA polymerases by her PhD thesis work on the 5S gene-specific factor TFIIIA with Robert Roeder at the Rockefeller University. After postdoctoral work on the mechanisms of yeast Pol I and Pol II initiation with Ron Reeder and Steve Hahn, respectively, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, she returned to New York to study mRNA splicing with Magda Konarska and joined the journal in 2012.

Katarzyna Marcinkiewicz, Associate Editor

Katarzyna Marcinkiewicz obtained her Ph.D. with Lorraine Gudas at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences in New York City, studying epigenetic changes in oral squamous cell carcinoma. During her postdoctoral training with Gregory David at New York University School of Medicine, her research focused on proteins linking the function of the nucleus and cellular senescence. She started her editorial career at Nature Biotechnology in 2016 and joined Nature Structural & Molecular Biology in 2017.
