Treatment of postprostatectomy urinary incontinence: the case against the male sling

Drogo K Montague and Kenneth W Angermeier

290

For the man suffering from urinary incontinence following prostatectomy, two surgical options are currently available: the bulbous urethral sling and the artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). The authors discuss the literature for the two techniques, and explain why they believe AUS implantation is the preferred option in this patient population.

The effects of cancer and cancer treatments on male reproductive function

Henriette Magelssen, Marianne Brydøy and Sophie D Fosså

312

Cancer and its numerous treatments can adversely affect fertility in male cancer patients by disrupting spermatogenesis or by impairing erectile and ejaculatory function. Management of the valve–bladder syndrome and congenital bladder obstruction: the role of nocturnal bladder drainage

Michael J Fumo and Gordon A McLorie

323

Boys with posterior urethral valves can go on to develop valve–bladder syndrome, and are at risk of renal damage if chronic over-distension of the bladder and upper urinary tract is not alleviated. In this Review on the management of valve–bladder syndrome, the authors discuss a number of treatments available for this group of patients, and highlight the role of nocturnal bladder drainage in alleviating hydroureteronephrosis.

Mechanisms of Disease: the epidemiology of bladder cancer

Claudio Pelucchi, Cristina Bosetti, Eva Negri, Matteo Malvezzi and Carlo La Vecchia

327

Epidemiological trends in bladder cancer incidence and mortality are influenced by the exposure of different populations to environmental risk factors. In this article, the authors discuss the different factors that contribute to the risk of developing bladder cancer. The current trend for decreasing mortality from bladder cancer in some developed countries, where exposure to environmental risk factors is becoming less common, is also highlighted.
