(A) Direct intra-articular injection of naive MSCs. After harvest from an appropriate source, MSCs can be delivered in suspension to the joint space, where they encounter all intra-articular tissues. (B) Matrix-guided application of naive MSCs. Restoration of the deep cartilage defects that occur in osteoarthritis might require MSCs to be seeded into a biodegradable scaffold, which enables their controlled, local application to damaged areas of cartilage. Abbreviation: MSC, mesenchymal stem cell.
