Diabetes: Renal benefits of lowering BP in the absence of hypertension
Abstract
In patients with chronic kidney disease, aggressive blood pressure control is required to combat progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) as well as occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Several guidelines have proposed that inhibition of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin type 1 receptor blockers (ARBs) should be the first-line antihypertensive therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes, the leading cause of ESRD.
