Author biography

Howard L. Fields received his M.D. and Ph.D. in neurosciences from Stanford University Medical School. After completing residency training in neurology with N. Geschwind at Harvard Medical School he joined the faculty at the University of California San Francisco. As an active clinical neurologist with a specialty in pain management, his research focused on two areas: the circuitry underlying opioid analgesia and pain mechanisms in postherpetic neuralgia. Recently, he has shifted his research focus to mechanisms of drug and alcohol addiction. He is currently Professor of Neurology and Physiology, a principal investigator at the Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center, a member of the Neuroscience Program and Director of the Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction at UCSF.
