Chief Editor: Christiaan van Ooij, PhD
Christiaan started his microbiology career in the laboratory of Joanne Engel at the University of California, San Francisco, where he studied the transport of the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis inside the host cell. He then joined the laboratory of Richard Losick at Harvard University to study the mechanism of protein localization of sporulation-specific proteins. To expand his horizons beyond bacteria, he then investigated the export of proteins from the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in the laboratory of Kasturi Haldar at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. He joined the Nature Reviews Microbiology team in June 2008.
Senior Editor: Sheilagh Molloy, PhD
Before embarking on a career in scientific publishing, Sheilagh studied for a BSc at the University of Aberdeen and then moved to the University of Liverpool where she carried out her PhD studies looking at DNA gyrase and its sites of action in Escherichia coli. Following a short postdoc in Edinburgh, she joined the Trends in Microbiology team in April 1999. After working as Assistant Editor on Trends in Microbiology for nearly 4 years, Sheilagh moved to join the launch team of Nature Reviews Microbiology in February 2003.
Associate Editor: Andrew Jermy, PhD
After studying for a degree in biochemistry at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, Andrew carried out Masters and Doctoral research in the laboratory of Colin Stirling focusing on the secretory pathway in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Following two postdoctoral positions, one in the Stirling laboratory and one in the Cell Cycle Control group of Hiro Yamano at the Marie Curie Research Institute, United Kingdom, he joined Nature Cell Biology as a locum Assistant Editor in 2007 to pursue a career in scientific publishing. Andrew is looking forward to reconnecting with the microbial community in his new role at Nature Reviews Microbiology.
Assistant Editor: Rachel David, PhD
After obtaining a B.Sc. in biology and an M.Sc. in molecular medicine from Imperial College London, Rachel carried out her doctoral research in the laboratory of Federica Marelli-Berg at Imperial College London, examining the role of the guanine nucleotide exchange factor VAV1 in T cell migration. In 2008 she decided to move into science publishing and joined the Nature Reviews Immunology team as a copy editor. In her new role as Assistant Editor for Nature Reviews Microbiology and Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, Rachel hopes to broaden her knowledge of the two areas and develop her skills as an editor.
