Welcome to the web focus on Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) to accompany the September focus issue of Nature Reviews Microbiology. This web focus features a selection of recently published Reviews, Perspectives and Research Highlights on the topic of HGT from the Nature Reviews journals. The focus also features recent original Research Papers, News & Views and Reviews published by Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Biotechnology and Heredity.

In recent years, it has become increasingly evident that HGT is central to microbial activities that influence both our health and the environment — it is also clear that the exploitation of HGT holds great promise as an instrument for their improvement. Indeed, the 'mobilome' is receiving unprecedented attention from a wide range of scientific disciplines. By drawing together relevant content from across the Nature Publishing Group, this special issue of Nature Reviews Microbiology and accompanying web focus aims to assess our current knowledge on the role of HGT in microbial evolution, in shaping the structure and function of microbial communities, in controlling a myriad of environmental and public health problems, and in safely harnessing the benefits of biotechnology.

Thanks to the generous support of the US Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, all Nature Reviews Microbiology articles and selected NPG articles are freely accessible for six months.
