Heartburn is a burning chest pain or discomfort that generally occurs after eating. Although a typical symptom of GERD, heartburn can occur in a number of gastroenterological conditions (such as achalasia) or indeed can be 'functional' with no organic cause. This infographic provides a snapshot of heartburn, illustrating pathophysiology, insights into associated gastrointestinal conditions and management.

This infographic was produced in honour of World Digestive Health Day on "Heartburn: a global perspective" as part of the World Gastroenterology Organisation's campaign to raise awareness of heartburn worldwide.
