What is the role of EUS in screening for chronic pancreatitis?

Since its original introduction to the field of gastroenterology in 1982, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) has been regarded as a sensitive imaging tool to evaluate the pancreas. EUS enables high-resolution imaging of the pancreas and provides far greater detailed information than that obtainable by CT or MRI scanning.

Chronic pancreatitis is a relatively uncommon disease with an estimated incidence and prevalence in the US of 4 cases and 13 cases per 100,000 persons, respectively.1 Its diagnosis is easy to make in patients with advanced disease, in whom both endocrine and exocrine insufficiencies are present, whereas it is more challenging to diagnose in its early stages when minimal changes are present in the pancreas.
