With the patient lying on their side (usually the left side when the operator is right-handed), the internal anal sphincter can be easily palpated and injected. The lower rounded edge of the internal anal sphincter, which is 3 cm long and 5–15 mm in thickness, can be felt on physical examination, at about 1–1.5 cm to the dentate line.
