October 2012

The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is rapidly increasing as a result of population ageing, urbanization and associated lifestyle changes. Indeed, the number of people with T2DM worldwide has more than doubled over the past three decades. This poster illustrates the risk factors associated with this increased incidence and provides an overview of the pathophysiology of T2DM, including how insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction in individual organs result in overt T2DM.
