Targeting inflammation in diabetes

September 2013

Overnutrition and obesity are associated with the activation of the immune system and the induction of an inflammatory response, which contribute to the development of insulin resistance and, ultimately, type 2 diabetes. This poster illustrates the obesity-associated inflammatory changes that are observed in adipose tissue, pancreatic islet β-cells and the vasculature, and their contribution to insulin resistance, highlighting anti-inflammatory therapeutic targets that are currently being pursued for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
