Abstract
In May 2008, alvimopan (Entereg; Adolor/GlaxoSmithKline), a peripherally acting 
-opioid receptor antagonist, was approved by the US FDA to accelerate the time to gastrointestinal recovery following bowel resection surgery. It is the first pharmacotherapy to be approved for this application.
