Duloxetine hydrochloride

Anathea B. Waitekus & Peter Kirkpatrick

In August 2004, duloxetine hydrochloride (Cymbalta; Eli Lilly), a selective serotonin- and noradrenaline-reuptake inhibitor, was approved by the US FDA for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It has since become the first such antidepressant to be approved by the FDA for an indication outside of psychiatry, when its approval for use in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain followed in September 2004.
