Dr Joaquim Fernández-Solà is a Clinical Senior Consultant of the Alcohol Unit, Department of Medicine, Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, in the region of Catalunya, Spain, and full Professor of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. Dr Fernández-Solà received his medical degree with honours in Medicine at the University of Barcelona, was a resident in Internal Medicine at the Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, and undertook a Fellowship in Clinical & Research Neuropathology at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He obtained his PhD in alcoholic cardiomyopathy, and has a master's degree in hospital health management. He has also been a guest Professor at the Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in Bethesda, MD, USA. He is secretary of the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ESBRA). Dr Fernández-Solà is currently involved in studying aspects of alcohol-induced organic cardiovascular and neurological damage. He is an author of 250 peer-reviewed articles, reviews and book chapters in the field.
