a | Stroma and epithelia from a normal or aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice are recombined and then grown in the same, normal systemic hormone environment of the host mouse. Following harvesting, normal stroma and normal epithelial tissue recombinants show a normal pathology, whereas ArKO stroma and ArKO epithelial recombinants show hyperplasia. b | Stroma and epithelia from normal and ArKO mice are recombined and grown in the host animal as in a; however, the host animal is given an ER
-selective agonist for the duration of the experiment. After harvesting, the hyperplasia in the ArKO stroma and ArKO epithelial recombinant is completely abrogated with this tissue now having a normal pathology that is indistinguishable from that in the normal stroma and normal epithelia recombinant.
