Eric M.V. Hoek, PhD, Founder and CEO of Water Planet, Inc. and Professor, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

Professor Eric M.V. Hoek is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Water Planet, Inc. He is currently on leave from his professorship in the UCLA Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) where he also directs the UCLA Nanomaterials & Membrane Technology Research (NanoMeTeR) Laboratory. Prof. Hoek was co-founder of the UCLA Water Technology Research Center, UC Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology and the KAUST-Cornell Center for Energy & Sustainability. His UCLA research group explores the union of nanomaterials and membrane technologies for water, energy, biomedical and environmental applications. Prof. Hoek also enjoys applying his basic research knowledge to practical applications having consulted for a range of private companies, law firms, US federal, state and local agencies, private research foundations, NGOs and foreign national research agencies. Prof. Hoek has served as an advisor on major water reuse and desalination projects in Southern California and has been involved with the formation of several water technology companies, including NanoH2O (now LG Water Solutions) and Water Planet.

Ryo Honda, PhD, Associate Professor, Faculty of Environmental Design, Kanazawa University

Ryo Honda is currently Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design at Kanazawa University in Japan. His speciality is microbiology in water treatment and water environment, especially on resource recovery from wastewater, microbial community and health-related water microbiology. He is also familiar with water issues in Asian countries through his wide experience of field surveys. He obtained his PhD in the field of Environmental Engineering at University of Tokyo in 2005. He was engaged as an assistant professor in two projects—on interdisciplinary sustainability science and on international cooperation for water reuse technology development—until he was appointed at the current position in 2012.

Bhekie B Mamba, PhD, Director, Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability (NanoWS) Research Unit, University of South Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa

Professor Bhekie Mamba is the Director of the Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability Research Unit, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of South Africa since September 2014. He is a visionary and astounding leader and has occupied a number of leadership positions including being a Professor and Head at Department of Applied Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Johannesburg, Director of the DST/Mintek Nanotechnology Innovation Centre – Water Research Node and the Director of the Institute of Nanotechnology and Water Research at the University of Johannesburg. Prof Mamba has published about 7 book chapters, over 200 journal papers, about 12 technical reports, and over 50 conference proceedings. He has vast experience in the area of nanotechnology, polymer chemistry and water treatment technologies. His passion is towards creating sustainable solutions that would ensure that the water resources are maintained and preserved for future generations.

Arne Verliefde, PhD, Particle and Interfacial Technology Group (PaInT), Department of Applied Analytical and Physical Chemistry, Ghent University, Gent, Belgium

Arne Verliefde finished his PhD at Delft University in 2008, on the transport mechanisms of organic solutes in high-pressure membrane systems. After a post-doc at the UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science and Technology, Arne became professor at Ghent University in 2011, with a chair on physico-chemical water treatment. Arne has a strong research focus on interfacial phenomena in separation processes. The applications of his research are primarily within water treatment and water recycling, with three main research pillars: ultrapure water production; fundamental membrane transport; and low-tech applications for developing countries. Arne is the author of more than 100 international publications, including more than 75 peer-reviewed journal papers. He has a strong track record in the field and has collaborated with many international research and industrial partners.

Syed M. Zubair, PhD, Distinguished Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Syed M. Zubair is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Professor Zubair received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.  Prof. Zubair’s research interest involves both applied as well as fundamental areas of energy and desalination systems: thermal and membrane based desalination systems, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, and fouling of heat exchangers. He has participated in several research projects, including projects supported by MIT-KFUPM Center for Clean Water and Clean Energy.  The heating and dehumidification (HDH) technology that he developed with MIT collaborators ended up in commercial application for treating produced water from oil and gas wells. He has published over 200 research papers and was awarded 6 US patents.
