Abstract
In early May 2009, more than 40 astronomers and physicists gathered at a workshop to honour two pioneers in the newly coined field of Galactic Archaeology — Michael Bessell and John Norris, both of the Australian National University's Mount Stromlo Observatory — and to hear results and forecasts for current and future generations of massive stellar surveys that will revolutionize this field (Overcoming Great Barriers in Galactic Archaeology Palm Cove, Australia, 5–8 May 2009; http://www.aao.
