Acknowledgements

Inspiration and topics for discussion within this Commentary, which is by no means an exhaustive review, came from the Optics in Cardiology meetings that have been held biannually in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, since 2011 (www.opticsincardiology.org). This conference is a topical and multidisciplinary meeting for clinical researchers, engineers, basic scientists and entrepreneurs in the field. It aims to demonstrate current practice and emerging technologies to clinicians, and to expose engineers to first-hand accounts of clinical needs.
