Stefan A. Maier

The development of modalities for guiding and routing light has been instrumental to the development of the modern information society. The most pervasive technology, that is, cables made from optical fibres, bears all the hallmarks of a 'good' waveguide — low attenuation, high transmission speed and large bandwidth — bar one.
