Abstract
After almost 50 years of laser research, efficient and compact laser sources operating in the mid-infrared region from 2
m to 5
m are still lacking. Now, cascaded silicon Raman lasers look set to provide a convenient answer.
Although lasers presently cover a far broader wavelength range than could have been envisioned when they were first invented in 1960, the application-rich mid-infrared region between 2
m and 5
m remains a virtually untouched and unexploited territory.Now, this could be about to change.
