Nature Reviews launches
Naturejobs is formed from classified advertisingAlzheimer's pathway identified
- NPG launches Nature Reviews. With seven journals, the series is established as the market leader with each journal securing the highest impact factor in their discipline.
Classified advertising in Nature, which has exsisted since 1976, is rebranded as naturejobs. The naturejobs.com website launches a year later. Today naturejobs.com is the premier science jobs website.
Nature Immunology launches. - The paper "Identification of the major Aβ1-42-degrading catabolic pathway in brain parenchyma: Suppression leads to biochemical and pathological deposition" appears in Nature Medicine. This important paper reports the discovery of a naturally occuring protein that degrades the molecule that causes Alzheimer's disease.

Nature Publishing Group, in partnership with The University of California San Diego, launches the Signaling Gateway, a free online resource for scientists wishing to keep abreast of all the latest research on cell signaling.
NPG enters into new publishing partnerships:- BJC (British Journal of Cancer) published on behalf of Cancer Research UK
- Heredity published on behalf of the Genetics Society
- Eye published on behalf of The Royal College of Opthalmologists
- Skull remains are found in Africa. At 7-8 million years old these remains are the earliest known record of the human family. Nature publishes the research.

New publishing partnership with EMBO
New insights into Autoimmunity
- NPG enters into a publishing partnership with The European Molecular Biology Organization to publish The EMBO journal and EMBO reports.
- Nature Immunology publishes Fontenot's paper showing that Regulatory T cells, immune cells that help to prevent autoimmune diseases, specifically express the transcription factor Foxp3, which is essential for their development.

Molecular Systems Biology launches, an open access online journal published in association with the European Molecular Biology Organization.
Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism joins NPG, published on behalf of the International Society for Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism.- Ajayan and his team create the world's smallest brushes, made from carbon nanotubes. Their research is published in Nature Materials.

A new class of quantum Hall effect is found, in bilayer graphene. The research is published in Nature Physics.
Nature reports the discovery of fossilized "Tiktaalik" skeletons. Having both fish and tetrapod characteristics, paleontologists believe Tiktaalik to have been an intermediate form between the two.
Logothetis' paper "Negative functional MRI response correlates with decreases in neuronal activity in monkey visual area v1", published in Nature Neuroscience, shows for the first time that decreases in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal are caused by decreases in neural activity. This paper allows us to interpret thousands of previous studies that have used fMRI to look at brain activity in humans.

NPG launches a new online news resource, Nature Reports, beginning with Nature Reports: Avian Flu.- Scientists make important advances in the field of spintronics that could lead to the creation of smaller, faster electronic devices. The research is published in Nature Nanotechnology.

- Nature Geoscience will launch. This will be a monthly multi-disciplinary journal aimed at bringing together the most significant research across the entire spectrum of the Earth Sciences.
