Abstract
When a molecule is subjected to a stimulus — such as a pulse of light, an electric potential or an encounter with another molecule — it has to make a choice. It can either do nothing or it can undergo a reaction that leads to a new stable or metastable state with physicochemical properties differing from those of the initial state.
