Setting the standard
Abstract
Researchers from Japan are at the forefront of international efforts to establish standards for assessing the risks associated with nanomaterials. Adarsh Sandhu reports. The world's leading industrial nations have competed with each other to establish new nanotechnology programmes and to exploit the commercial potential of all things nano, but there has been much less interest in research into the impact of nanomaterials on human health and the environment. However, this situation is changing, especially in Japan, where the government has launched a number of initiatives to introduce new guidelines and standards related to the safety of nanomaterials.
