Protein engineering: Electrifying cell receptors

Abstract
Modifying receptor proteins on the surfaces of cells so that they interact with proteins that are not their natural partners is one way of controlling signalling processes in the cell. Moreover, when isolated from their natural environment, these re-engineered proteins could be used for various sensing and drug-screening applications.
