Genetically encoded Ca2+ sensors come of age

A particularly elegant method for the exploration of brain function relies on the detection of changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration in neurons with fluorometric sensors. Action-potential firing is invariably associated with transient elevations in intracellular Ca2+ concentration.
