Surprising behaviour of a zeolite under pressure. The plot shows the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume of potassium gallosilicate natrolite, normalized to its volume at ambient pressure. The solid line follows the change in volume with increasing pressure, which between 1.2 and 1.7 GPa unexpectedly expands by 1%, before continuing its decrease up to a maximum pressure of 4 GPa. After the pressure is released (broken line) the volume of the natrolite at ambient conditions is 0.8% larger than before (red spot). This is the first time that such pressure-induced expansion has been shown to be irreversible. (Fig. adapted from ref. 3).
