The lively, well-organized book, At the Helm: A Laboratory Navigator by Kathy Barker is a valuable resource for newly appointed principal investigators, who have to recruit, motivate and manage people, teach classes, carry out institutional responsibilities and compete for funding while doing ingenious research—the only thing that they have been trained to do until now. Many principal investigators thus feel overwhelmed by the multitude of their new responsibilities.
