Abstract
Despite most of the available evidence pointing to the contrary, it remains a popular misconception that AIDS in Africa is a distinct disease from that suffered in industrialized nations.
A widespread misapprehension exists that HIV-1 infection progresses much more rapidly in patients in Africa than in those in industrialized countries. Although a few studies do suggest that HIV-1 infection develops more rapidly in Africans1, 2, 3, most have reported disease progression similar to that in industrialized nations4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
