Expression of a sodium iodide transporter by the thyroid gland causes
iodide accumulation, and radioactive iodide is an effective treatment for
thyroid cancer. The identification of a similar transporter in mammary tissue
indicates that this approach might also be used to treat breast cancer (pages 871−878).
