Abstract
Two receptors have now been identified for the virus behind severe hand, foot and mouth disease (pages 794–797 and 798–801).
An outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in China in 2008 caused widespread anxiety among the public, as news media reported deaths of young children, and provided daily updates on new cases. Eventually, nearly 500,000 cases were reported, with more than 120 deaths1.
