Because it is assumed that tumors are heterogeneous in their genetic makeup10, a biopsy sample may contain cells that are not representative of the whole tumor. In contrast, the analysis of free circulating plasma DNA or circulating tumor cells, both released by the tumor itself, might yield information about all subclones in a tumor. Additionally, obtaining cells from the tumor tissue is an invasive procedure, whereas blood drawing is considered minimally invasive.
