Cardiovascular disease:Change of heart New findings in mice uncover how reactive oxygen species (ROS) can promote cardiac hypertrophy (Cell 133, 978–993). Previous work had shown that low amounts of ROS generated by high blood pressure can induce hypertrophy by activating Nuclear Factor of Activated T cells (NFAT)—a transcription factor that prompts the muscle fibers in the heart ventricle to thicken, distorting the organ's structure.
