T cells can turn back cancer, but they don't always reach tumor cells in sufficient numbers to do so. A close look at the cells of tumor blood vessels suggests a way to boost T cell migration in individuals with cancer (pages 28–36).

Why does the immune system help thwart tumor growth in some people with cancer but not in others? The work of Buckanvich et al.1 in this issue of Nature Medicine suggests that, at least for some of them, a molecular switch operates within the blood vessels of tumors to keep T lymphocytes out.
