Regulatory T-cell development: is Foxp3 the decider?

Tregs play essential roles in immune homeostasis and protection against autoimmunity, but also contribute to immunopathology in cancers, infections and other diseases. The recent discovery that the nuclear transcription factor forkhead box P3 (Foxp3) appeared necessary and sufficient for Treg development electrified investigators by providing the first specific marker identifying these enigmatic cells.
