In the social sciences, there are generally two ways of exploring a topic such as the under-representation of women in science: the researcher can use large, representative databases to 'tease out' empirical regularities or she can conduct case studies of particular groups of individuals. Although each method has its own strengths and weaknesses, most social scientists would agree that both approaches are necessary for gaining an in-depth understanding of the problem at hand.
