[Classics in arteriosclerosis research: On experimental cholesterin steatosis and its significance in the origin of some pathological processes. Arteriosclerosis 3, 178-82 (1983).]

First report indicating that cholesterol can cause atherosclerosis; laid the foundation for all research on the pathogenesis of the disease.

Ueber experimentelle cholesterinsteatose und ihre bedeutehung einiger pathologischer prozesse.
Anitschkow, N. & Chalatow, S.
Pubmed

Showed dominant co-segregation of a high level of cholesterol, xanthomas and early heart disease in multiple kindred, which later became known as familial hypercholesterolemia.

Angina pectoris in hereditary xanthmatosis.
Müller, C.

Definitive paper in its era, indicating that lipids came from degenerate thrombus. Although later proven wrong, the function of the thrombus in the plaque has continued to be a key issue, culminating in the clinical trials of tissue plasminogen activator as a therapy for acute plaque-driven closure of the coronary arteries.

Pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
Duguid, J.B.
