Atherosclerosis has been the subject of intense research for over 100 years. The insights provided by this research have unraveled the molecular and mechanistic causes of lesion development and led to the identification of risk factors and therapeutic targets. We are happy to present this annotated list of landmark papers from the last 100 years. For their guidance in selecting these papers we are indebted to B. Coller, J.P. Cooke, V. Fuster, G. García-Cardeña, M. Gimbrone, B.W. Grinnell, G. Hansson, J.W. Heinecke, D. Kelly, R. Langer, J. Loscalzo, A.J. Lusis, F. Mach, R. Mahley, K. Moulton, R. Nagai, W. Palinski, J. Plutzky, E. Pure, E.
