 Juan Carlos López, Editor
Juan Carlos López was born in Mexico in 1967. He started his scientific career in the mid 80s at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, looking for neurochemical correlates of memory formation. Juan Carlos obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University under the supervision of Eric Kandel, and carried out postdoctoral work at the Instituto Cajal in Madrid. He is the author of two scientific books and, before joining Nature Medicine, Juan Carlos was the Editor of Nature Reviews Neuroscience in London.

Charlotte M. Schubert, Senior Editor, News and Views
Charlotte Schubert majored in biology at Pomona College in California and then returned to her hometown, Seattle, to work on the pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. She then entered the graduate program at the University of Washington Department of Zoology and completed her Ph.D. in the laboratory of James Priess at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. There, her studies on developmental genetics focused on cell fate specification in the early embryo. Her writing experience includes internships at Science News and The Progressive Magazine. She has also been an AAAS mass media fellow, and worked as a health and science reporter at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Alison Farrell, Senior Editor, Research Manuscripts
Alison Farrell pursued her undergraduate degree in microbiology and immunology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and received her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, where she studied cell cycle regulation in the laboratory of David O. Morgan. Alison subsequently joined LeukoSite in Cambridge, MA as a postdoctoral fellow. She did a second post-doctoral stint at Harvard Medical School before joining Nature Medicine in 2001. Alison is presently located in NPG's San Francisco office.

Michael Basson, Senior Editor, Research Manuscripts
As a graduate student in Jasper Rine's laboratory at University of California at Berkeley, Michael Basson studied the sterol biosynthetic pathway and its rate-limiting enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in baker's yeast. His postdoctoral work was on developmental genetics with Robert Horvitz at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then worked in the biotech industry, first on the use of model organisms for drug discovery and then on angiogenesis from the perspective of treating cancer. He joined Nature Medicine in 2003.

Clare Thomas, Senior Editor, Research Manuscripts
Before joining Nature Medicine in November 2003, Clare Thomas' research career was in the field of gene therapy. After obtaining her Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, she joined the group of Pedro Lowenstein and Maria Castro at the University of Manchester, where she investigated the potential of adenovirus vectors for gene therapy of brain diseases, before moving to Mark Kay's laboratory at Stanford in 2001 to explore the mechanisms of AAV transduction in the liver.

Randy Levinson, Associate Editor, Research Manuscripts
As an undergraduate student at Caltech, Randy Levinson studied the evolution and the proteolytic regulation of Alphavirus replication in the lab of James Strauss. He went on to graduate school in Keith Yamamoto's lab at the University of California, San Francisco, to study the regulation of nuclear hormone receptor signaling using a yeast genetic screen. After graduation, he carried out postdoctoral work with Eseng Lai at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he investigated the role of renal stroma in embryonic kidney development. He continued these studies during a second postdoc at Columbia University with Cathy Mendelsohn before joining Nature Medicine in 2005.

Eva Chmielnicki, Associate Editor, Research manuscripts
Eva Chmielnicki attended the Bronx High School of Science, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in Neurobiology. She did her graduate work in the laboratory of Steven Goldman at Cornell University, and studied induction of neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells in adult mammals, focusing on regenerative neurogenesis in Huntington disease. She did a postdoc with Deanna Benson at Mount Sinai in New York, studying axon guidance and synaptogenesis, and joined Nature Medicine in 2005.
