Regulation of NKG2D ligands: a purposeful but delicate affair

The NKG2D receptor stimulates natural killer (NK) cells and T cells after engaging ligands that are inducibly expressed on malignant or virus-infected cells. A prominent biological function for NKG2D and its ligands, at least in tumor immunity, is generally recognized.
