Natural killer cell recognition of missing self

I formulated the missing-self hypothesis for natural killer (NK) cell recognition in the autumn of 1981, while writing the last chapter of my doctoral thesis. In 1975, I had joined the Department of Tumor Biology of the Karolinska Institute to take on a research project in parallel with my medical studies.
