Sequences from Species without Completed Genomes

Even in the absence of a genome project, a species may have genomic DNA in the databases. The sequence may be in small pieces, and it is beyond the scope of this tutorial to explain how to assemble them. Nevertheless, there may be pieces large enough, for example, to define the extent of a promoter.

It is worth checking for species in which an annotated locus is available. Using the search phrase:

biomol_genomic[prop] AND "interleukin 4"[titl]

to search NCBI's nucleotide database to search for genomic DNA sequences with interleukin 4 in the title results in the hits shown below. Substitute your gene name for interleukin 4 in the search phrase. Note that the quotation marks are necessary if your gene name has more than one word.

Use NCBI's taxonomy database to look up species that you do not recognize. The hits shown below are all primates.
