Periscope, up! Monitoring microbes in the intestine

Abstract

Dendritic cells below the epithelium layer are now reported to send processes in between epithelial cells, while maintaining the integrity of the tight junctions. This mechanism could sample intestinal fluids for pathogens to aid immunologic protection of the host.
