Ocean chemistry: A matter of mineralogy
Abstract
Iron is abundant on Earth, yet its supply to the oceans is limited, and when it does reach the sea it is often in a form that does not easily dissolve in surface seawater. As iron is a key micronutrient for phytoplankton growth, its scarcity renders iron a limiting factor for primary productivity in many open ocean regions.
