A number of spontaneous mutations in GFAP, encoding an astrocyte-specific
intermediate filament protein, causes a neurodegenerative disease. It seems
probable that these mutations effect gain of function of the GFAP filament
and thereby have an impact on the cytoskeletal architecture and interactions.
